Convenient how everyone can call the sales a "flop," but ignore the great streaming numbers that are going to give the song a Top 10 (and if she's lucky with how local they were, Top 5) debut on the Hot 100.

Maybe we should all remember that despite the record-destroying legend-in-the-making at the top of the charts today, sales ARE virtually dead, and nobody will likely cross 100k digital sales again after Q4 2016.

Problem was a surprisingly strong seller for her (and Bang Bang if that counts), but everything besides that hasn't sold great either. I just don't think Ariana will ever be a truly great seller. She's one of the first examples of a popstar who will hugely rely on streaming for her relevance and power. We will probably see more like her in the future.

No. Tracking week changed in July and ends on Thursday now. For both singles and albums

Exactly.

Expectations of a very strong sales debut and of strong sales in general are double misguided, both because they're based on an outlier (Problem) and because of the state of sales compared to when that song debuted.

Most of the strong sellers nowadays established their fanbases WAY before streaming became the leading music platform: Adele (2011 when digital sales were peaking), Taylor (late 00s-early 10s when digital sales were rising and peaking), Justin (2010-2012 when digital sales were peaking), Coldplay (early-late 00s when album sales were much better and during the birth of the digital era), Eminem (early 00s-early 10s), etc. Artists debuting now will have a lot harder time doing so.

Ariana's lack of sales also have to do with her not being likeable or relatable, but streaming is surely taking some of a chunk. ME is one of the most streamed female albums on Spotify.

Meghan is sort of an exception but I think she appeals to adults way more than Ariana, who are more likely to actually buy albums. I imagine younger and newer artists post-2015 pretty extensively relying on streaming power for relevancy.

Exactly what I stated. Streaming is the new thing and Ariana is doing great numbers on that department. Her video for Focus is near 50 million views already and the song is doing wonders on Spotify. People need to stop expecting artists to debut over 250k+.
