Today marks the 10th anniversary of the record-breaking end of the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season

SS Alex has formed. This is a remarkable occurrence, as it is only the fourth known tropical cyclone to form in the Atlantic in January.

Never before have January storms occurred in both the Atlantic and the Eastern Pacific (east of 180W) during the same year.

I love that they didn't have the regular satellite floater ready.

Curved bands of cloudiness and showers/thunderstorms associated with the low pressure system over the eastern subtropical Atlantic have become better defined over the past 24 hours. Although the convection is not very deep, it is likely of at least moderate intensity given the relatively shallow tropospause over the area. Given the increased organization, and the apparent dissipation of nearby frontal features, advisories are being initiated at this time. The cyclone is co-located with an upper-level low, and appears to have only a weak warm core, so it is being designated as a subtropical storm.

Alex is like a king tbh.

We have the 2004 storm that was a Cat 3 at a high latitude, we have the 2010 storm that was strong for a June storm, and we now have this January storm!
