It's so shocking to see this song in my top 15 when I've actually known it since 2010. When I first listened to Ellie's album "Bright Lights" I was so obsessed with her former singles "Your Song" and "The Writer" that I completely overlooked this one. When it was first released as a single I thought it was too weak and I honestly thought she wouldn't make it in America. It eventually grew on me a lot and I still think it sounds so fresh. I honestly hope this isn't her only hit cause she really deserves more.
Alicia Keys "Girl On Fire"
After a rather disappointing era Alicia was finally back this year. "Girl On Fire" was one of the most promoted singles this year, it was performed at several events and it was on heavy rotation in radios and music channels. At first I thought she was going to flop, she hadn't had a hit since 2007 and this song is very risky but I'm so glad it worked. It's my favorite single of hers since "Unbreakable". I think the Inferno Version was rather pointless but it's the one that's selling the most so I'm fine with it. The music video is so awkward though.
fun. "Some Nights"
"Some Nights" is the kind of song that doesn't make you fall for it at first listen. Instead it grows steadily until you find yourself singing the chorus stuck in your head. Some people might think this song was very overplayed but I think that's because it was getting exposure just as early as "We Are Young" started to smash. I tried my hardest not to listen to it until the music video premiered and even though it sounds like a Lion King rip off it's one of my favorite songs of the year. The autotune was completely unnecessary though.
The Fray "Heartbeat"
Like it or not but I say The Fray is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Their latest album was paid nothing but dust this year and it makes me go mad because they put so much effort on it. The lyrics are so inspirational, the vocals are delightful and their sound is better than ever. "Hearbeat" might not be as strong as "You Found Me" or "How To Save A Life" but it definitely deserved more credit. I still can't believe radios literally ignored their singles and yet they keep overplaying Coldplay's generic crap which is basically the same genre.
Matchbox Twenty "She's So Mean"
Hands down my favorite music comeback of 2012! It was such a surprise to see them back this year because I didn't even know they were releasing. I remember I used to be a big fan of their songs back in 2000-2002 specially "Bent". This song sounds so fresh, seems like they found a way to showcase how much they've evolved as a band while still keeping some of their signature sound. Of course radios are not here for them but it's not like they (or their fans) actually care.
