This is a song with some serious pedigree behind it and cute legend that some might appreciate. Whitney's ninth number one single in the U.S. was written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore who had earned an Academy Award in 1980 for the theme song from the movie 'Fame.' Pitchford has other another Oscar nod to his name for another iconic 80s film: Footloose (in this case the nomination was for best original screenplay).
The song-writing duo of Pitchford/Gore originally wrote "All the Man that I Need" for disco diva Linda Clifford, who recorded a superb version of the song in 1982 (Patti Labelle and Sister Sledge also included it in their repertoire, but never released it as a single). It was Whitney who would eventually bring us its best recording, and would take it to the top of the charts in 1991.
When Nippy's version became a hit, some people believed that Pitchford had written this for his boyfriend (and future long-time husband) Michael, which eventually lead the songwriter to actually compose one song for his guy: "
If I Never Met You" (recorded by Barbra Streisand in 1999).
With the exception of BadEartha, everyone who voted likes this song. KasioKas "was gonna give this an average score until she went in at the 3:00 mark and onwards", which merited a high score on his part. Conatus enjoys this ballad, saying that it provides "further evidence that I'm Your Baby Tonight is her best album. Whew." That much is true.
I used to cry myself to sleep at night, but that was all before he came
