It's shocking to me that it's a 1000$ when its in the same country.. I can get a trip from detroit to aruba for 400$ in the summer if I want to!

It's the lack of competition. There's only 2 major airlines in Canada, and like 7 in the US. Or one cause Air Canada is currently a giant mess right now.
Calgary to Vancouver costs like $480 for the roundtrip. That's less then 400 miles.
My flights from Vancouver to Montreal in the summer are gonna cost me like $800, and that's with a seat sale.
Taking a bus / train would take like 3 1/2 days. With almost no scenery to look at either. BC is beautiful, but Alberta to Manitoba is nothing but grass.
But yeah it would be a lot cheaper. (Greyhound Vancouver - Toronto is about $300 roundtrip.)
