the absolute lack of self awareness then his dismissive response followed up by an #alllivesmatter tea is honestly embarrassing. it's 2016. glad he got dragged ruthlessly.

I'll say right now that I didn't watch the BET's, so I don't know exactly what happened. But here's my thoughts. (Please read this whole message first if you're going to reply this, because if you don't read the whole message, you won't understand the full idea of what I'm trying to say here.)
If you don't want to read the whole thing, the basic idea of what I'm trying to say is in this first paragraph.
What Justin Timberlake said is offensive to the black community, but I don't think he understands why people think it's offensive, and that's why it's gotten him into this mess. The majority of the American public stopped being racist a long time ago. There's a small minority of ignorants still out there, but those people are always frowned upon. As for the whole thing of white artists taking inspiration from black artists, the people who do it typically respect black culture, and it's only culture appropriation if they don't respect it. And of course in extreme culture appropriation cases when the white artist is racist. If they appreciate the art that black people created, and they want to be a part of it, they should be allowed to wholeheartedly. These people greatly appreciate the art, and have a great respect for black people. Since when did black people decide that white people couldn't enjoy their music? They should appreciate the people that want to be a part of their culture, so let them be a part of it. It's not about skin color, it's about their appreciation for the art, and being a part of the community. As for any community, anyone should be allowed regardless of skin color. Imagine if a white person told a black person that they couldn't make pop music because it's "White People Music" and doing so would be a disgrace to white culture. I think we can all agree that that's completely racist, lots of Black people like music that is commonly considered White. Now reverse the situation, and it's still the same. Reverse racism does exist, but black people don't want to acknowledge it because it gives their community a bad light, and the truth is that only a small majority of black people are like that, but it still does happen, and the fact that some Black people are saying that Justin Timberlake isn't allowed to appreciate black music is proof of it. They probably don't mean to be racist though. Black people who hate white people, don't allow white people to take part in their culture, and don't allow them to respect their art solely because of their skin color, are racist towards white people, in the same way that Feminists who hate men, and think that men shouldn't be allowed to do, or respect typically girly things, are sexist towards men. I'm a woman, and I see men-hating feminists all the time. We don't need more hate in the world, we need more love, peace, and acceptance. The truth is that we all need to be more accepting to each other. Music is music, people should be free to create they kind of music that they want to. We really don't need to make this another race thing. People should create the music that they love. Both Black and White people are inspired by Black music, and both Black and White people are inspired by White music. This isn't about race, and it doesn't need to be. It's about a love for the art. That's all it is. And that's all it needs to be.
So that's the basic idea of what I'm trying to say, but I'll try to explain it in full here. First of all, I'll use a comparison to All Lives Matter because it's kinda the same deal here. Anyway, I don't think anyone who says things like "All Lives Matter" or "we're all equal" is purposely trying to be offensive, they mean well, and I'll try to explain what their thought process is when they say that, the people who say AllLivesMatter are (typically white people) are people who care about all people of all races, and of course this includes the Black community. Their focus however is not black community, but their focus is that all lives matter, that we're all equal regardless of skin color or race. Although, pretty much everyone knows that, it's 2016 after all. The people who say All Lives Matter believe in equality for all races, that's why they're even saying that. However, It comes off as ignorant to the black community, but these people saying it typically don't know that, and even if they do, they probably don't know why it's offensive, and if they did they wouldn't be saying it. A lot of times people can easily say things they don't mean, because they don't understand how what they're saying affects the black community, and it can wind up being a huge mess, as is the case with Justin Timberlake. The problem is that a lot of white people don't really understand that the purpose of BlackLivesMatter is to bring awareness to the black community, and to stop all of the constant violence, and racism towards the Black community. AllLivesMatter see BlackLivesMatter and they think "Yes Black Lives Matter, but All Lives Matter". Of course when Black people see this they get mad because to them it seems to them like those White people aren't caring about them, and aren't acknowledging all of the problems that black people have to go through daily because of ignorant racists. All this time they spent trying advocating for the basic human rights of their community, and here come White people trying to make it all about them with this "All Lives Matter". Yes, All Lives Matter, black people know that already, that's why they started Black Lives Matter in the first place, to bring awareness to all the awful things happening due to racism, and Black Lives Matter is for equality for all races, but they focus on the awful things that happen to their community. People who say All Lives Matter just don't get it. I think it's all pretty much a big misunderstanding. There are probably racists out there who say All Lives Matter to look like good people, despite the fact that they're racist. But I think that's a minority, I don't really see racism that often, maybe it's because of where I live, or maybe it's because I'm not black so I wouldn't know.
On another note, can someone please explain why white people can't be inspired by other races? People get inspired by all types of people all the time, I don't see it as stealing their culture, it's just being inspired. Like why can't white people make black music if that's the kind of music they like? It's only culture appropriation if the white artist is racist, and doesn't care about the black music they are inspired by, and continues to say hateful things about the culture they are taking it from. I've never seen this happen, from what I've seen, white artists who get inspired by black artists typically are greatly inspired by them, and greatly appreciate their art. Are white people not allowed to enjoy the things black people do? White people are starting to get more into Black culture now, they shouldn't feel excluded because they're not black. Regardless of skin color, people should be able to freely enjoy the music they like, as long as they're being respectful to the people who made it. I think a lot of people throw around cultural appropriation, because there was once a time when white people didn't want to listen to black music, so white people basically stole it and got popular, with those white people back in the day typically being racist and not caring about black culture and saying lots of racist things. That's culture appropriation. But that rarely happens anymore, and if it does, it's typically on a much smaller scale. The white people who take inspiration from black artists now, are the ones that respect black music. Do you know how popular black artists are right now? We've have a lot of huge popstars in the past 10-15 years that are black. Plus Rap and Urban are huge right now, and the large majority of those artists are black. Thankfully, This isn't the Oscars, there's a lot of diversity right now in music, and that's a wonderful thing. Honestly, just look at the #1's this year. Ever since March, every single #1 (except for, interestingly, Justin Timberlake) has been by a black artist. (Kyla is also white, but she's featured on a song with 2 black artists.) I'd say black music is going pretty great now. Especially considering that Anti, Lemonade, Views, The Life Of Pablo, etc. have all been huge successes.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Thanks for reading this if you did. Let me know if I'm not understanding anything. Sorry for this huge post.

37 pages? really?
Justin spoke the truth and I'm glad he did. All of the fascists trying to shut him up can take several seats.
End thread.

I've seen some posts by you that I don't agree with, but I agree with a good chunk of that first paragraph and at least you understand why black people get mad when people say "All Lives Matter". I see how JT was ignorant in this case though. On another note all the power to black people and musicians! I hope brown people can start showing more pride and be outspoken about causes like they are.
