If (or when) both lose, we'll come up with the conclusion that it was never the candidates' fault?

uhh, what
Hillary lost because she was not only 'establishment', but because she was so friggin' unpopular. Okay yeah, she won the popular vote - but so many of them votes would have come from people simply not wanting Trump and willing to vote for her just to stop him. If I was an American, I would have voted for her for exactly that reason.
If Sanders would have lost (and, I think there is a good chance he might have), it would have been because in the end, he would have been portrayed as an American-hating, secret old communist who wants to cut the military and bankrupt America.
Both of them have their very serious flaws. For Sanders, it would have been his age, image and ideology. For Clinton, it was her controversies, how trusted she was, and I guess partly because she was a woman too.
There is many platforms aside from them two. America would still elect a progressive 'status quo' candidate
if they are popular. I'm certain Biden would have won. Personality politics I'm certain has a massive impact on swaying independents - look at every election in modern time. The charismatic or warm candidate that grabs your attention has always won. Its not a coincidence. Sanders couldn't do this, nor could Clinton. Someone like Biden would have. So you either go for someone like him in 2020, or go for someone that'll be able to rally the Obama coalition.
