true but a key reason split-ticket voting was down in this election was that gridlock in both houses of Congress was at an all-time high due to Republicans' obstruction. so Trump voters - even the ones who usually lean Democrat - felt like voting for a Democrat senator would result in a Democratic Senate and a Republican white house aka another 4 years of intense obstruction
Republicans knew their obstruction tactic would help them keep a Republican congress if a Republican won the Presidency just like they knew obstruction would make the Democrats look bad because Obama would take the flack for getting nothing done rather than them taking the flack for being obstructionists. they played the long game and they won bigly
