Okay, I first heard this album earlier today and now I've played it through seven times so here goes.
My Kind: This song is SO feel good. It's one of the most polished and best vocally produced songs on the album. She never sounds bad in it and the middle 8 with the "One of my! One of my!" is so infectious.
One In A Million: I wouldn't mind this song as the next single. It's such an anthem! Hilary's delivery of "You're going down without me!" is so pained and this really works as a breakup song. The way the chorus explodes after the bridge along with the ad lib of "Oh!" gets to me every time.
Confetti: "You side effect me" is a fantastic lyric. This song gets better as it progresses. "Your heaven is a place on earth" at the end along with the snaps and then the thunder sound effect are nice touches. It's a fun song to blast full volume.
Breathe In. Breathe Out. "I remember how my avenues were yours." "I made a top 10 list..." "I was hanging on your words like I'm sixteen." "I remember when the real became too real." "This whole song is so lyrically heavy and it feels like the most revealing out of the all of the songs. Major props to the writers, they really nailed the emotions involved in a breakup. The bridge is always stuck in my head and I can't help but chant it along with her when listening. This song reminds me of the songs that used to be popular in the 90's.
Lies The sound effects are fun and the chorus is so easy to sing along to. The horns are brilliant.
Arms Around A Memory This is a nice album track. For an upbeat song it's quite relaxing. My complaint with it is that the lyrics seem clunky. "A ship inside a battle that we broke"..what does that even mean?
Stay In Love The verses are too robotic and I'm not in love with the way they flow yet. The chorus is really nice and powerful though. The bridge breaks my heart.
Brave Heart So sad but hopeful. It really has a great message. "But the other side is calling me tonight even though it hurts" is my favorite lyric here. You can really tell in songs like this that she lived through the things she is singing about. She emotes so well in this song and I love the chanty bridge here. It's also the perfect song to bridge the pop from the folk pop on the record.
Tattoo Tattoo sounds like it could have fit on Taylor Swift's first album or on a modern day country record. Voice props on this one.
Picture This A lot of the lyrics on the latter half of the album have verses with hanging words. "Half dressed. Sunrise. Late night. Your eyes." I'll get used to it but I prefer lyrics that build off of one another. I don't mind the whistles but the chorus is awful. They should have adjusted the song to be an octave lower because Hilary is straining so hard here and it sounds shrill. Christian what the hell man. I don't hate the bridge but this song would have worked much better if it had the vocals re-done.
Night Like This After Hilary described this as having a Sheryl Crow vibe I expected to like it as much as I like Chasing The Sun but this is so great! It's a true duet and I love how Kendall and Hilary finish each other's sentences. The vibe of this song is so chill and relaxing, I love it. It's a highlight on the album for me. The ending of this song reverberates in my headphones, it threw me off the first time
Belong This is a cute inspiring song. The "Heys!" threw me back to "What Dreams Are Made Of."
Rebel Hearts The best bonus track for me. The chorus packs a punch. Shout out to the wolf.
Outlaw Shrill vocals and it sounds like a demo just like Picture This. The lyrics and chorus are a lot of fun though. Hilary's first "shi.tty" on a record, I was surprised when I heard it.
Top 5 at the moment: My Kind, One In A Million, BIBO, Night Like This, and maybe Lies. There are a few contenders fighting for that 5th spot. It's still too new for me to decide how this stacks up against her previous work.
