1) Competent directors
2) Spin-offs that people have wanted for decades (Boba Fett, Young Han Solo, etc.)

Yes, and even though they do suck, there is still hope! The franchise doesn't need to die yet. I doubt JJ Abrams will make it truly great again though, Star Trek wasn't all that.

And the reason that the prequels sucked is because of George Lucas. Now that he really doesn't have any creative say, things will improve.
