Shake It Off had a lot of hype and was released off the momentum of the Red era. Lord has already been establishing herself globally. Whereas, LS had nothing to capitalize on outside of North America. Shake It Off wouldn't have done as well if it was in LS's place. Everything before that last sentence is conjecture and theoretical. You (nor I) have any idea how SIO would have done in Love Story's place, we only know how they actually performed...which was at the very least equal.
And that last sentence...the hell are you talking about? Love Story was performed MUCH more than SIO. It's understandable since, as you say, it was her international breakout hit, but she promoted that much more than she did SIO.
And it's longevity in the US on the Hot 100 was due to it's being released on Country first, and then to Pop when it was leaving the Country charts. Same with YBWM.
