One of the rare smashes in this rate, “Crush” was a global success that reached the top five in more than a dozen countries, including the U.S., where it spent a month stuck at #3 behind Monica’s “The First Night” and Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” Coming early in the teen-pop boom, it had a more restrained, elegant vibe than most of its peers; the song’s witty lyric and almost somber shimmer make it like the dark chocolate of the bubblegum era. Debuting only a few months before the Britney Phenomenon™, however, Jennifer Paige was quickly sucker-punched out of the game, a one-hit wonder for the ages.
Best bit: Jennifer expresses a nonchalance about relationships (“It’s just a little crush/Not like I faint every time we touch/It’s just a little thing/Not like everything I do depends on you”) that is, in retrospect, a refreshing change of pace from bubblegum pop’s boy madness, and sends a much better message, too.
The music video... has some totally hot superfluous shots of an open-shirted boy riding along in Jennifer’s car.
Her album was too ahead of its time
Very guitar-oriented, plus she doesn't have a voice the GP would like easily. I highly recommend her album tho, it's probably the best purchase of the year for me.
