it's not desperate, it's clever marketing. her team know she has really supportive fans. was it taking advantage of them? yes, probably, but she still sold every single copy for full price.

even if gaga or katy or whoever did that sort of release, they still wouldn't have sold half of what taylor did. it's because her fanbase is so solid and strong, whereas the others' fanbase isn't.
