If I'm not mistaken this song was co-written by Bruno Mars. It's no surprise cause it has that romantic cheessy formula all over the lyrics. Believe it or not that's what I like the most about this song, despite that I normally can't stand Bruno Mars' songs. The fact that it was released as the album's third single after two generic forgettable songs is beyond me and what saddens me the most is that if Bruno had kept this song for himself it would have spent months at number one on his name alone...
Emeli Sandé "Next To Me"
Since I failed to do justice to this masterpiece in 2012 I'm using its american release to give it a mention this year. Emeli's song-writing style is very emotional and raw but yet so sweet and deep. The kind of songs that always go straight to your soul. No wonder many of her songs always coveted by similar artists. This year she was heavily promoted in the US but the GP didn't embrace her as expected, probably cause of the constant comparisons to Adele. There's always next album I guess.
HAIM "The Wire"
HAIM's sound is very unique, nothing like what you normally hear on the radio these days. It's not revolutionary, life-changing 'high art' but right here, right now HAIM's sassy, enthusiastic, "one for all" music style feels freshly invigorating, infectious, basically, a drop of the good old stuff. The video is so weird but it's hilarious as hell. I honestly can't wait to hear what they have in mind for their next album.
fun. "Carry On"
In all seriousness I think this is my favorite fun. song. It's just anthemic for me, everything about it makes me feel like anything is possible, like life is just a dream. The acoustic set recorded of this song will lift you higher than the sun itself. Nate Ruess really impressed me with this one. It was the first time I'd heard the truly raw power of his voice. As if that wasn't enough the music video is mind-blowing.
Tegan and Sara "I Was a Fool"
I can't even begin to describe how much I loved these girls this year. They went from being complete strangers to ruling my playlists for several months. "I Was a Fool" reminds me a lot of Roxette's "Listen To Your Heart" which is one of my favorite songs of all time. The first four lines are probably my favorite on the album. I find them so clever. The song itself is also, IMO, the best on on the album. It has a nice 80s feel to it with a touch of R&B thrown in.
