Yes, payola. It didn't boost any significant sales for Rated R, and only sold 2.3m as a single, yet biggest radio hit of the year? Def Jam wasn't going to risk another miss for that era, sadly it didn't help anything. Nothing to "lmao o-kay" about, honey. And I like the song, but it's the truth that you clearly don't know.

Rude Boy's sales are rather disappointing. I would've expected it to go triple platinum.

As much as I would like to believe you Rico, since there is no actual way to prove payola, you make yourself look pressed

Of course there's no actual proof of payola, there never has been in the music industry. That's the exact reason why it's illegal and has laws because it happens secretly, and has many loopholes. I recall only one slip-up in the past, and some label was fined for being found out. However, you can assume it with how a song performs, and "Rude Boy" has a lot of alarming signs.
And how exactly does it show I'm pressed? I like the song & love Rihanna's songs, but it's just my opinion & you'll have to deal with it.

"RB" naturally should've performed way better than them since it was exposed to a number of markets. But it was a payola-story, so that's why I'm not shocked that it only sold so much.
As for being the 3rd single, that doesn't matter much for that particular era since "RR" & "Hard" weren't huge successes. No reason for it not to sell.

LMFAO @ payola....Seriously?
Rihanna will have 4 songs to cross 100M AI in 1 year...The most by any artist in 2010. If payola is a solution and so easy to do, more artists would have that accomplishment.
Radio loves Rihanna. Period.
Who's that Chick and LTWYL Pt 2 are already getting play Let's keep the facts straight

I agree that the way some songs like RB are embraced by radio reeks of payola.
But on the other hand if payola exists, why didn't RCA use it to make NMT a radio hit? Lord knows they already poured buckets of money into the album. Or would that have been too obvious given what a flop it was on iTunes, while RB at least did well?

I'm surprised with the low sales on iTunes, the radio still seemed eager to pick it up, knowing people didn't care about the song. I do see a lot of signs up RB using payola, though.

Yes. RB would've been a hit regardless, just not as big as it was.

The thing is, her label couldn't afford payola. What artist there is making enough money to do that? Christina hasn't made an album in years, so she has nothing. No one cares about Avril, and Ke$ha was a newcomer

"NMT" was another song I suspected of it, however I figured it also could've been the usual case of a song blowing up then dying. I'm not certain on my thoughts on that.

Clearly we're talking about RUDE BOY, not Rihanna the artist and her entire radio career*. Rihanna is very loved by radio, but the Rated R era was a bust and Def Jam was going to do whatever it took.
Also no one claimed payola is the solution to everything, or that everyone uses it so stop trying to make this discussion bigger than it is. I suspect "Rude Boy" was a payola-case, the numbers back it up. You can agree or don't, it won't matter to me.

2.3 million is plenty. Radio doesn't care about how many people love the song. They just want to avoid playing songs that people dislike. That's why an iTunes hit like Blah Blah Blah performed poorly on radio, and Rude Boy was a big hit. The latter was much less polarizing. Payola has nothing to do with it.

What the hell is going on in here?
Also, I find it really hard to explain why sold so low considering the huge radio play. I mean, it's not only that, but the video is Rihanna's second most viewed video on YouTube with 110,000,000 views (or so).
I think only other two videos by Rihanna could have more than 100M by now if they weren't removed by Vevo (Umbrella & Disturbia). Rude Boy was a huge hit but it didn't match both of the previous ones.
I guess being a 3rd single really does have an effect, I guess.
I hope the Loud era would have a better digital success than Rated R, although it doesn't look that way.

haters are mad i see
Radio djs stated (and i read this) that they received an overwhelming reaction for Rude Boy that is very rare on radio. Def Jam was very surprised by its success, they didn't expect it all and didn't even plan for a single after rude boy. They saw the huge success of Rude Boy so decided to stick with Ester Dean and Stargate for Loud, making What's My Name. Its sales were perfectlly normal for a 3rd sinjgle that was out for months before its release, but most of all urban flavored single where sales are usually much lower compared to pop singles.
Your point is dismissed. #Staymad.

Ok! My god, Rude Boy's digital downloads were a disappointment, but lets all get over it and move on.
Its been lingering in the top 200 for quite some time now since Only Girl so it will be 2.5 Mill by the end of the year, not that great, not that bad.
Lets all move on.

Sometime next week I want to see this:
3. Teenage Dream (Glee Cast Version) - Glee Cast
Rihanna and Ke$ha would be occupying the top, of course.
EDIT: Oh crap, I forgot the Peas.
