33. Taylor Swift “Teardrops On My Guitar”
Album: Taylor Swift
Genre: Country, Pop
Producer: Nathan Chapman
US Billboard Hot 100: #13
This was the first song that I got to hear from her, and I loved it at first listen.
Teardrops On My Guitar was her pop breakthrough single and it showcases her unique lyrical style, telling a story about her secret love for a guy named Drew during high school;
”I’ll put his picture down, and maybe get so sleep at night” is my favorite line from the song. Her soft voice makes this country ballad more personal and enjoyable. The video narrates the song from beginning to end, and it’s also good to mention she looks gorgeous in the scene where she is crying in her bed with her guitar. I have no doubts that
Teardrops On My Guitar is the best country song of the year and Taylor a fresh new talent in the music industry that will be here for many years.
32. Mariah Carey “Bye Bye”
Album: E=MC²
Genre: R&B
Producer: Stargate, Mariah Carey
US Billboard Hot 100: #19
Mariah decided to release this song as the second single from E=MC², and while many disagreed with this choice, I thought the song had potential to be huge. When I first heard E=MC², the song immediately stood out and I was addicted to it for a long time. Mariah states the topic of the song upfront singing
“This is for my peoples who just lost somebody”, basically based around the loss of her loved ones.
Bye Bye is a song everyone can relate to and it can even get some listeners teary-eyed. Mariah’s vocals are fantastic and very emotional, and she gives the song her own personal touch. Mariah never disappoints, and she sure didn’t with this one.
31. Simple Plan “Your Love Is A Lie”
Album: Simple Plan
Genre: Pop/Rock
Producer: Dave Fortman, Danja
US Billboard Hot 100: ---
Their last album was a complete mess, but at least they decided to release this, which is arguably one of the best singles of their entire career.
Your Love Is A Lie is very different from any other song they have released before, it could be because of the Danja production. The chorus is very catchy while the verses are very aggressive, Pierre asks
“Do you think about me when he ****s you? Could you be more obscene?” in one of the verses. The video is a clear representation of the song, there are shots of the band playing and shots of a woman cheating on her boyfriend while Pierre watches everything from his apartment in agony. Although, they’ve been disappointing me lately, I have to say this is one of the best tracks of the year.
