Reeces' Best Of '09: Top 50 Singles (04-01)
The next four tracks pretty much defined music in 2009 for me, it was extremely hard to rank them, but here it goes...
04. Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow"
'I'm so 3008, you're so 2000 and late' has to be the best line in a song of the year, Fergie really brings it in this track. Trying to take this song out of your head is truly a difficult task, the auto-tuned sound and the crazy beats make it even harder. Boom Pow' is simply a fun track and I'm glad it took the Black Eyed Peas to the top of the charts, where they deserve to be.
03. Jordin Sparks "Battlefield"
I don't know what is it about Jordin that I like so much, last year she claimed a spot in the top 2 with 'No Air, and this year she released one of the best tracks of the year once again. 'Why does love always feel like a battlefield? Jordin repeats in the chorus with the emotion that she puts to every slow song she delivers; I got goosebumps the first time I heard it. Her voice sounds beautiful and she took a more artistic direction in the video, something that I truly appreciate. I'm gonna keep supporting this girl as long as she keeps making great music like 'Battlefield'.
02. Rihanna "Russian Roulette"
'Umbrella' was my number in '07, 'Disturbia' topped my chart in '08; this year Rihanna barely misses the top spot with her highly anticipated comeback single, 'Russian Roulette'. Rihanna shows a vocal growth in this song, her voice has never sounded better before as she uses very intelligent metaphors about a russian roulette game to describe the story of a difficult relationship, it's very obvious what she means. The fear and pain in her voice make this even more enjoyable, and that amazing video, one of the best, if not the best video released this year. 'Russian Roulette' is a dark track, very different for Rihanna, it shows a more mature side and it was definitely worth the wait.
01. Kanye West "Heartless"
I have come to the conclusion that 'Heartless' is my favorite song by Kanye, it came out of nowhere, but it had me jamming to it for a few months at the beginning of the year. The way Kanye uses the auto-tune is brilliant, T-Pain should take some lessons from him. and the melody makes this song a truly enjoyable listen. The sad and cold vibe about the song only adds more to the track, while the lyrics show a feeling of loss and pain as Kanye questions himself how could someone be so heartless. Kanye West is always pushing the envelope, and I don't like to justify his ego, but damn, he really makes amazing music.
