Do y'all think RTW would be more of a commercial success if it was released today? It sounds more "fresh" to me now whereas in 2011 it always sounded so out-of-the-loop and a bit funky to me. I remember everybody and their mother called that it was going to "flop" as soon as it was released. Although maybe I feel that way because imo today it sounds so much more of an easy listener than it did back then. Maybe because it's been almost five years (damn ) and it's had time to settle. Because it was undoubtedly aged incredibly well. Almost everybody knows the song and most people seem to really get a kick out of the beat and the "who run the world? Girls!" line. I think that's one of the pros about releasing music that doesn't sound similar to the music that is currently popular at its time and doesn't follow any musical trends.

Sorry that turned into a bit of a rambling session but I am curious to hear any of y'all's thoughts!

i see what you're saying & i agree. pretty much all of "4" was ahead of its time as far as where music trends were. even tho "Love On Top" was a big R&B hit...it could've been a pop one too. because a couple yrs later...songs like "Suit & Tie", "Blurred Lines", "Uptown Funk", etc...all these throwback sounding songs became smash hits.

RTW was destined to underperform from the getgo due to so many factors. One of them was that the demo was leaked and it was so LQ and messy and that is the one people formed their opinion on. The other MAIN factor was that the sample [the entire instrumental] was already out like 2 YEARS before and everybody was already over it bc it was sort of popular:

If we had heard that beat for the first time ever in the song + she got to release it the way she wanted it [the week of the BBMAs rather than a rush release], the outcome would have been different.
