It's not the People's Choice/Billboard Awards.
It's about what/who they like the best, and it's super impressive Chris won so much when his sales and radio play have been so low.

He apparently hadn't even cracked the T100 Songs on iTunes.
He hasn't cracked the T40 on Country Songs.
His album didn't go T10 on Billboard.

It would be like if...I dunno, some pop person who's mostly only known for writing suddenly breaks out and wins stuff without commercial or radio success beforehand. Maybe an equivalent could be if Sia won Grammys for her own music before Chandelier came out?

Chris Stapleton was the least deserving of the New Artist nominees (by far), but yet he got the award, The judges are trying too hard to jump start his career since he's so traditional. I doubt the effect will last for him or the format, but I could be wrong.

100% agreed. CMAs are known to be very political. In hindsight, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they're trying so hard to force this to happen.
