A non-Hillary (aka, non-NAFTA) Democrat can still win the rust belt. She barely lost Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Ohio and Iowa are becoming the new Missouri and Indiana. They'll still elect Democratic senators (Sherrod Brown is up for re-election in 2018) but on a presidential level they're done.

Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota are the wild cards. They were all really close but we don't know if they're now just swing states or if they're going to keep getting redder, or even flip back blue. But I think we will lose them eventually (especially Michigan/Wisconsin) in favour of the south...

Talking long term, I don't know if holding on to the rust belt is a viable strategy when someone like Trump clearly spoke more to the voters there.

Longterm we'll have to stick with what brings up points: diverse. Arizona, Georgia and if we put up a good fight in court and with our all, Texas could come sooner than we think.

Only so few people care about trade deals. The notion of trade deals is too complicated for Trump's supporters. Trump won on migration, racism and Republicans coming home, that's all. Anti-globalism and such are merely ways to make their platform look more than just being against PoC.

They only need Trump to disenthuse his base again. Show them nothing's changed in four years and they'll no longer be motivated to vote for Trump. Bring in a charismatic 'for the people' Democrat with minority support and bam, you've got a Democrat win.
