Overall, I think there are better options for singles from 1989, though. There isn't enough time to release HYGtG over the other (imo) better choices.
It's different from Red where the only 3 obvious pop singles were the 3 Max tracks, & the rest were up for grabs. I remember thinking State of Grace and Red would've worked on pop radio, but I guess it was wise not to release those, since she probably knew at the time that she was going to move away from the sound of those tracks and more towards the MM ones.
I'm still not sure why 22 wasn't huge besides that maybe people didn't relate to it enough or it was too bubblegum.
