I actually agree with a lot of these, but you also need to add The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to that. Atmospheric, intense and gritty, and as much as the original is lauded for what it was and the documentary-style creepiness, as a whole it kind of drags as a movie. The story definitely benefited from some updating with the remake (and I mean the Biel/Balfour remake, not the 3D sequel that came out last year).

I'm so back-and-forth with TCM remake.
Is it a good horror film? Yes.
But does it match the original? Not for me. The original literally made me feel ill to my stomach. The atmospherics of that film just weren't matched, imo.
But I could definitely understand how others could share your belief. I guess it just depends on the day for me.
