The album release was obviously a tremendous success, but she used promotional strategies that aren't even commercially viable for most artists.

How is it risky when it's literally the next logical step? She's an album artist. Therefore, releasing an album right off the bat, garnering social media and regular media attention, and buying out iTunes wasn't risky. If anything, it was less risky than her releasing a lead single.

Oh, I bet Beyonce + team didn't even pay Apple for the promotional spots. But that's because she's Beyonce. No ordinary artist could afford to hijack all the advertising on iTunes for 10 days, even if their album was an iTunes exclusive.

No, the "next logical step" in the entire major label pop market is to get Dr. Luke to make you a certified smash, get a Clear Channel deal, and promote that **** everywhere.

The album hype was gone so fast though. And the multiple efforts to revive it (i.e #whatispretty, remix with Nicki Minaj, XO being used in 10 commercials) have failed pretty damn hard
