You're not counting the time it took to broadcast the 2 commercial breaks immediately before and after her performance. All of this, combined with her performance, was easily over 20 minutes and probably closer to 30.

Immediately after her halftime performance would have been a weird time to start watching just for the commercials so I think its safe to say that the viewers gained from 8 to 8:30 were for Katy

The time period after the 2nd quarter (halftime leading into the 2nd half/end) is ALWAYS the most viewed segment of games and it increases the further along it goes

Because the 4TH quarter is the most popular aside from halftime (when everyone gets caught up on the score, stats, what happened, etc.)

It could also have to do with the score or how the game was going at that time. A lot of people will tune out of a game if it's not close or interesting enough and then tune back in for the 4th.

Look up the ratings of any major sporting event NBA Finals, Stanley Cup, etc. I guarantee you either the end of the 2nd quarter (going into half time) or the end of the 4th quarter is the most viewed segment. 1st and 3rd quarters are the most irrelevant always.

It's not a guarantee that it will increase (see Beyonce's for details), and nobody gives a **** until it does increase (which is at least a whole year from now). For now, Katy has the most watched musical event in TV history, in the US. Why? How? For how long? All literally irrelevant questions.
