Big Hoops could have done better if Intercsope would have invested in a campagne to gain buzz, those trailers on yt were nice, but she needed some major magazine covers and interviews, some big performance to introduce the song worldwide, And a huge collabo would also have gained buzz, that K'Naan song was nice, but if she could have featured on a more bigger star's song or album, it acually would have helped her. Nelly basically came from a underperformed Greatest Hits era. It all was kinda underwhelming, even though her stuff is pretty good.
No Doubt is a whole other level, Gwen had 2 succesful solo era's, she has done some major brand deals and kept in the spotlights worldwide. The other guys did their things too. Thye came "back" to the spotlights as band with the re-release of their Greatest Hits and all. Settle Down is classic No Doubt, it picks ups where they left with Rock Steady, but it still sounds fresh and it sounds summery. I mean if what's My Name, Rude Boy etc. (as in summery/islandish inspired songs, they sound nothing alike) can do well, this also has chances. Beside that, No Doubt also has a bigger crowd, they fit in the pop crowd but also in a more alternative corner.
ND will be fine, the song is commercial, feels perfectly as who they are, it's catchy. The people who loved ND will be attracted by it and it also will gain new people!

You make a really good point I feel Gwen Stefani has always been more marketable as well, and her name has instant brand recognition. Solid fans.
