Trendy doesn't have to mean #1 hit, it means what's en vogue and popular now. Tame Impala are the "it" alt band of the moment that all the hipsters love right now. They're trendy. She's working with trendy collaborators on an album that's "not supposed to be trendy"

except it would? lol commercial success is obviously not her goal with this era, this is something she's doing for herself and for her well-being after years of being told by the suits what to do.

That's irrelevant, Currents was one of the most acclaimed albums of 2015 and was their biggest commercially to date, and they are definitely one of the 'it' bands in the indie world right now. This isn't up for debate.

Gaga doesn't need hits to sell albums, look at Cheek to Cheek.

ARTPOP also nearly doubled Applause's first week sales so the single doesn't have everything to do with it.

She has a very large and very loyal fanbase.

Gaga's not going to do that badly. The album will probably flop in the long run but I see her having a healthy (by her current standards) first week.
