What a lot of people don't realize is that it takes a LOT of talent and effort to make a good novelty song. It has to be catchy and memorable (like any pop song), but it also has to be
funny. And being funny is really damn hard, as anyone who got booed off the stage during open mic night can tell you.
Also, a good novelty song has to
stay funny after multiple listens, or else it runs the risk of getting annoying. And there are few things more insufferable than a novelty song that isn't funny (see: Disco Duck, Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum), Red Solo Cup).
Songs like those really make you appreciate the efforts of comedic artists like Weird Al, Jonathan Coulton, The Lonely Island, Flight of the Conchords and Tenacious D... you know, guys who actually know what the hell they're doing.
