This is kind of true for films too, look at the early reviews for Birth of a Nation, where almost everyone was saying that as a film it just wasn't that good at all, but because of how "vital and important the message is", they give it a good grade
Same with Selma a bit...... *runs*
The problem with films that tackle subject matters like that is that it's very hard to not make them into sappy, preachy educational experiences that are very well vital and important, but as pieces of art aren't really deserving of praise. Film criticism isn't supposed to be moralistic. Something like Doubt, which looks at intersections of race and power in a more subtle way, is not as loud a signpost for black lives matter or anti racism or whatever, but it's better art.
