Ideally a balance would be found, and I think her choruses do find the right balance. They're quirky but catchy pop. It's the verses where she tends to go off the rails melodically and lyrically. Probably in an attempt to de-pop the song and force depth.

I know it sounds cliche but she really should just write from the heart. A lot has happened to her over the years and she can only muster up songs about...nothing?
Dope seems authentic, and I think that's why it gets praise. It doesn't seem contrived, like every other track on ARTPOP that screams 'oh, hey guys, look at me trying to be an artist! Hey critics I hate you but here's me trying to impress you as an artist.'
Gypsy has universal lyrics that aren't over the top or stupid either.
She's very capable so I am excited to see what happens next. She probably has songs 10x better than BR on her laptop
). it's a perfect time for Gaga to showcase her artistry in a bit more musically personal way. she doesn't have to give up dance pop if that's the kind of music she likes making, but like if she's so determined to show people wrong then she can't just turn to shocking people. especially since people are expecting her to shock them. the best way she can wow people is do something they won't expect, which is ANOTHER reason this era has been meh on whole for me. she's not doing anything different continuity-wise. a single or performance for Dope or Gypsy and videos for them would definitely show people she's changed her approach.
