"Rapture" was released as the second and final single from the band's 1980 album Autoamerican. It was #1 for two weeks in the US.
This is a song I expected to be a little more polarising due to the interesting combination of ethereal singing and that iconic rap, but aside from a 1, a 3, and a couple of 4s, it was pretty well-liked.
Also, fun fact: This was apparently the first #1 in the US to feature a "rap". Talk about white privilege!
What the GP had to say:
Buyonce1814 was full of comparisons: "I really love the disco feel to it. This is such a bop. WHY does the verse remind me of the "Child of destiny, independent beauty" part of Independent Women? It's very Donna Summer in my opinion, and I always appreciated the rap." I definitely hear Donna Summer now that you mention it. lovesong spoke nothing but praise for Deborah: "Why is Debbie Harry just so COOL? Ugh." Right? Legend. And the praise continues from Playa Playa, who says, "I love everything about this song, especially Debbie Harry's otherworldly vocals on the verses. It brings this ominous vibe to the song, then a silly rap starts to tell a bizarre story about'the man from Mars. It would've been my favourite song in 1980." Same, I would have been stanning so hard.
