Final Fantasy XIII & XIII-2 actually aren't that bad, assuming those were the ones you were referring to by "the new FF games". The story in XIII is pretty great, as is the gameplay. In XIII-2 the gameplay is even better but the story is very confusing if you don't pay close attention to everything going on. They're both only like $20 or lower, so they're a great RPG for the price.
As for Lightning Returns.... I really don't think there was a need for a third one. They made LR in 14 months, and the graphics suffered for it, as did the story line from what I've heard. I played the demo and was completely turned off, it was SO bad.
