Viola Davis is 100% lead actress in Fences. But if she wants to run Supporting, cool. Michelle Williams has 2 big scenes. Viola a lot more

There was some deliberation internally about whether Davis would be campaigned in the lead or supporting category. The fact is she would have been a force in either field, but in supporting, she pretty much has an unencumbered path to Oscar victory laid out in front of her — three years after she was poised to win the lead prize for “The Help,” only to drop it to “The Iron Lady” star Meryl Streep in the end.

So Denzel is frontrunner now? That is kinda sad cause I wanted Viggo Mortensen to be the winner but I guess that was a lost cause from the beginning. So happy Viola is getting great reviews, since HTGAWM is losing its leftover hype too, she deserved something else to be awarded I'll be so happy when she makes her acceptance speech

Yeah, Meryl in Sophie's Choice is one of the best performances ever and Viola just won't have enough material to rival it.

Viola seems to have gotten better reactions than Denzel so far so while she's obviously winning Supporting Actress, I think Best Actor is still a race between him and Casey whos main drawback is how subtle his role is but MBTS will be more popular with the Academy than Fences and they might want to "spread the wealth". Could be interesting.

Denzel is 100% winning Sag, as he's never won there and they like awarding veterans, plus possibly Bafta considering this'll be his first nomination which is a mess

The Sag deadline was 2 weeks ago and Viola chose to be submitted as Supporting (or so they say, I think she was pressured but whatever), it's very unlikely that she'll go lead now.

It's possible that the Globes and/or Bafta will upgrade her to lead if they consider the performance lead enough as they did last year with Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara but the Oscars usually don't care about fraud.

Yes, she can but no she won't cause she is a smart woman, changing her mind at this point, especially after submitting as Supporting in SAG can cause vote splitting in two categories for her at the Academy Awards and she might not even be in the top 5 of either category.

Globes can upgrade her to lead, I hope they don't tho cause she wouldn't win a Globe then, and so can BAFTAs but they probably won't cause apparently she has less screen time than Alicia Vikander had in The Danish Girl.

oscars will only bump up category fraud to the lead category if there is literally no one else who should be in lead.
i.e. the whale rider in whale rider, the reader in the reader.

With Fences, they can easily shrug it away as Denzel being the lead a la Redmayne/Vikander and Blanchett/Mara.

Viola went supporting at SAG. It's over. She's going supporting.

And it's apparently a borderline enough role (some saying it actually IS supporting) and Denzel hogs so much attention that no one will care to correct it.
