Lifehouse feat. Natasha Bedingfield "Between The Raindrops"
Traditional alternative music is hitting rock bottom lately. It simply goes like this: 1. The band releases a single which flops hard cause the label doesn't give a single penny for promo, let alone a top 40 radio release. 2. The album flops even harder cause the GP doesn't even realize the band is releasing it. 3. The band goes on tour and further promo for the album is either rushed or forgotten altogether. That's pretty much what happened to Lifehouse and many other great underrated rock bands in the last 10 years. This song was just too beautiful to go unnoticed, it's truly a shame. I really hope to see them back someday.
Fall Out Boy "The Phoenix"
Rising from the ashes of their old selves Fall Out Boy was, without a doubt, one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. I'm familiar with their old songs from 2005-2007 but I never expected anything from them outside of the generic punk-goes-pop safety zone these bands usually play on. This is the Fall Out Boy song of 2013 in my opinion, combining elements of both rock and pop influences in a very creative and ambicious way. The videos could have been better but hey! at least they get to release more than two videos unlike many other contemporary rock bands.
Panic! At The Disco "This is Gospel"
I gotta admit I'm not the biggest fan of this band. I always find their music videos and overall image very campy and overdone, but somehow they keep impressing me with each album. One of the things I'm most scared of in this world is doctors/hospitals/needles/diseases so naturally this video makes me feel uneasy and creeped out everytime I watch it. It's the song, the lyrics and the twisted message behind it all what really caught my attention and eventually made me put this song this high. I'm not sure if they'll be together for much longer though.
Alicia Keys "Tears Always Win"
Alicia Keys has one of the least controversial careers I've known of. It's like she's only focused on releasing music and the rest doesn't even matter. which is very respectable in my opinion. Unfortunately R&B is currently off the table and top 40 radio is no longer interested in playing cheesy midtempos like this on the regular (unless you're Bruno Mars). On top of that the Girl On Fire era ended as soon as the title track peaked. TAW is my favorite track on the album, it's like listening to her soul.
OneRepublic "Counting Stars"
This is the typical song that everybody loves and nobody can really say anything negative about it (unless you're trying to call it overrated which is true to an extent).
When both Feel Again and If I Lose Myself bombed hard I really though 1R was gonna go on tour and forget the album existed which would have been tragic cause this is one of my favorite albums of theirs. Thankfully this song put the album back on the map and gave the band a new shot. It's not my favorite 1R single but it's definitely one of their best videos.
