As Transformers shatters box office records in its first two days of release, the hit single from the movie by
Linkin Park sits tight for a second week atop the chart.
Katy Perry makes use of some tracks beginning their descent and skips a couple of spots to #2 with
Waking Up In Vegas, which bests the #3 peak of
Hot 'N Cold from last year. New to the top 5 this week is a song that is beginning to break at Top 40, and it's
Good Girls Go Bad from
Cobra Starship with a red-hot cameo from the latest sex tape scandal victim, Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester.
The big story this week? A record breaking five debuts. This past two weeks was one of those rare instances where I actually enjoyed the majority of the new 10-15 songs I added to my "current" playlist. Both new Alternative and Top 40 songs will be breaking in the next few weeks. Lead debut goes to the biggest band in the world right now,
Black Eyed Peas with
I Gotta Feeling. Nowhere near as manufactured as
Boom Boom Pow, and it sounds like a mix of David Guetta's "Love Is Gone" with the likeability and sing-a-long potential of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing". This is a track that is going to be huge in the clubs, and probably one of the biggest songs of the year, period. Next up is
Phoenix, with the infectious track
1901. I see a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon for this one, so hopefully it becomes a hit for them. Next up we've got the latest from
Mariah Carey, whose
Obsessed is a lot more of a genuine club banger than the spacey and mentally frustrating
Touch My Body was. Mariah did score 3 #1's off 'Emancipation', but failed to hit the top 5 with any track off of 'E =MC^2".
The Fray see another track on board for them as
Never Say Never continues its slow but steady climb and finally reaches the top 10 after 10 weeks. Now we've got their coffee house take on Kanye West's #1-hit
Heartless, which in my view is just a fraction better than Kris Allen's version. And finally, the last debut is for
Franz Ferdinand with
Can't Stop The Feeling, the third single from their album "Tonight" which already spawned the #1
No You Girls and the #2
Ulysses.
