I don't know if this is true but a good friend of mine who is a shawol once told me that Taeyeon was referred as trainee #1 and Jonghyun as trainee #2 because they were the best ones. So yeah, I think she was meant to be the leader since the beginning.
Eye also thought Taeyeon was always the leader, and that Tiff and Jessica just shoved their way to the front for no reason other than because they could.

Yeah, Jonghyun said that they would have weekly evaluations and he was always 2nd after Taeyeon, so he was happy when she debuted, cause then he could finally be 1st

I thought Jessica was the leader at first. She kinda should have been since she was the first member of SNSD.
My first SNSD comeback was The Boys and Taeyeon was kinda useless during that era. But Jessica stole the show with the most lines, the visual position, native English for their U.S. promotions and amazing vocals.
