Katy hasn't brought anything new and neither has Rihanna. And let me rephrase then every commercially successful single from loud (number 1 song) has followed a specific Euro/Club trend. Rihanna is about singles success apparently so no I didn't expect her to release a CKB or Man Down as the lead single. But my point is she could at least show some kind of semblance of growth. Even Gaga has shown more willingness and ability to play with and take some risks with her music. My point and opinion remains the same. When someone is on their sixth album they should not be worrying about following trends for success. They should be setting trends and able to release whatever they want to and still have it become successful.

The thing I have to say I'm probably happiest about when it comes to this single goes beyond the song itself. It's what it represents. The song is sung softly, it's very mature, and it doesn't sound like it could fit on any of her previous albums.

This implies that:
1. Rihanna is finally acknowledging her capabilities and working with songs and vocal techniques that highlight her strengths instead of screaming, which sounds nice on a track but can't be translated very well live.
2. No more immature, sleazy BS. Finally we get down to mature, classy Rihanna. At least it seems.
3. This album will play around and experiment with NEW sounds. No repeating ********. I thought she was a follower?

Rihanna randomly and suddenly just asked for someone to write and make her a rockstar song b/c it was the cool and edgy thing to do. Neither the song nor the lyrics have any personal connection to her.
