I've put together several video projects where I had to source and license clips/music and I never contacted the artists directly since most were processed through distributors.

It's not a matter of ethics. It's a matter of procedure. And this video director went about it the correct way.

I ACTUALLY have a Jamaican friend who told me Rihanna's patois in Work is really just gibberish.

And that Barbadians have the clearest island accent and also speak Creole. So didn't understand why Rihanna was making a mockery of their speech.
