Can Britney Spears' 'Femme Fatale' seduce us again?
Britney is back.
The pop princess, whose seventh studio album Femme Fatale drops Tuesday, is emerging from her self-imposed cocoon of privacy with a carefully choreographed media blitz.
She'll perform three songs in a pre-taped segment on Good Morning AmericaTuesday, she graces the covers of V and Out magazines, and she's scheduled to stop by Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards Saturday.
Early response to the album has been strong: Hold It Against Me, the first single, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, while the second single, Till the World Ends, hit No. 9.
For 29-year-old Spears, whose last album, 2008's Circus, went platinum, the stakes are high. Interest in her remains strong, partly because Spears — who broke out as a precocious teen with 1999's chart-topping ... Baby One More Time and went on to generate as many hits as headlines — is a survivor.
"I think the expectation for her is huge. People really want to hear quality from Britney," says Gillian Sheldon, vice president of programming at Buzzmedia, which owns the celebrity news site Celebuzz.com. Sheldon, who has worked at TMZ.com, has been watching Spears for a decade. "Coming up, she was this fresh-faced, new talent who burst on the scene who had this amazingly bright career, and then she had some troubles. And I think what she did is what some other celebrities really should do: She really stepped back, walked away from the limelight and really focused on herself, and I think people really respond to that."
Those troubles, of course, remain intrinsically a part of Spears' image, which veered from bubbly songbird to wobbly mess with two failed marriages. There's 2007's shaved head. Her 2008 standoff with police in her own home over her sons Sean Preston, now 5, and Jayden James, 4. Her subsequent hospitalizations.
But the Spears of today is older and appears wiser. She remains under the conservatorship of her dad, Jamie Spears, who retains the power to make life decisions for his oldest daughter. And she has almost entirely retreated from the public eye. (Wendy Washington at Spears' label, Jive, and Spears' manager Larry Rudolph both did not respond to phone calls.)
Spears told V magazine she has become more guarded. "I think it's easier to let people in when you're younger, but when I became a mother I wanted more privacy for myself and my children. A life away from my life," she says.
Her peers Lady Gaga and Katy Perry tirelessly hype their new releases. But this time, Spears is mostly letting her music speak for itself. So far, the response has been positive. Rolling Stone awarded her album four out of five stars because, says critic Jody Rosen, "the beats on the record are incredible throughout. All of the songs are very strong. It's one of those rare pop-diva records that consistently, top to bottom, has strong songs."
Rosen calls Spears' disc "pretty musically adventurous" and describes the singer as "a grown dance diva. What struck me with this record is that they're club songs. They're just good pop songs. I'm an unabashed fan of this album."
Can she deliver?
The pressure is on for Spears to deliver another multi-platinum album, which she hasn't had since 2003's In the Zone. Her muted publicity campaign for Femme Fatale presents its own challenges, causing industry watchers to wonder if Spears still has what it takes.
"We really haven't seen her out there the way (we've seen pop stars promoting). You don't see that with Britney," says Ken Baker, E!'s chief news correspondent. "For her to really grow her audience, kids want to see her and reach her and interact with her. There's a wall up around her, and maybe we don't know. There are sealed court documents, and I can only presume that a lot of answers to those questions of why is she under a conservatorship are inside those sealed documents."
Spears' current aversion to the spotlight applies to every facet of her life and is a change from the woman of yesteryear who courted attention, even if it was the wrong sort. These days, Spears makes rare outings with her sons and her low-key boyfriend, talent agent Jason Trawick. She told Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview on March 4 that her life is quiet, mostly focused on working out, watching movies and going on walks.
"We're really normal," she told Seacrest.
The few interviews she does are often performed via e-mail, such as the chat with Out magazine, which enables her to exercise more control over her message. And while she remains paparazzi fodder, Spears finds herself doing the near impossible: living a subdued life.
"I think she's become less tabloid material because she's living a very quiet life right now. Which is good. She's focusing on being a mom, on working," says Bonnie Fuller, editor of HollywoodLife.com.
Still a big draw
Despite her ups and downs, Spears has managed to remain relevant in the ever-shifting musical and celebrity landscape. While she has tried to keep a low profile in the past year, Spears takes the No. 1 spot cumulatively on USA TODAY's Celebrity Heat Index, which measures media exposure, since its inception in January 2007. Last fall, she appeared in a Glee episode dedicated to her music. Her last tour, 2009's extravagant and elaborate Circus, was a sell-out. Anticipation remains high for her new release, and fan interest in her remains rabid.
"It's amazing. If I go on Twitter and I mention something about Britney," says Baker. "How many artists have the ability to say they are going to make an announcement tomorrow and have the world completely drooling? She still has that power. She's got to deliver."
Chances are good that she will. Even at the height of her personal turmoil, Spears still managed to move 994,000 units of 2007's Blackout.
Her secret? A fierce professionalism when she's in the studio, say those who have worked with Spears. Producer Jim Beanz, who worked on Spears' Blackout and Circus albums, says that in the studio, Spears is in total control.
"She's a super-perfectionist. If she has to do it over and over again, as long as she's pleased and you're pleased, she's in there until it's done. She's very focused and driven," he says. "She knows what she likes. She's determined and she knows what she wants to do. That's why she is who she is."
Unlike her formerly super-sexed image, Spears is actually shy and reserved.
"She wasn't too outgoing. She wasn't super talkative. She was there to work. We didn't get too personal or buddy-buddy," says D-Roc of the Ying Yang Twins, who recorded the song (I Got That) Boom Boom from In the Zone with Spears: "She's a little quiet. I'm a very outgoing person. She keeps to herself. At that caliber of her career, you don't want to let too many people in."
Even kept at a distance, some of Spears' fans remain loyal to her. "I've stuck with her over the years because of her overall qualities: musical giftedness, beautiful voice, and, to me, her desire to build a meaningful life. Her musical future is unlimited," wrote 60-something musician Ed Smith, from Medford Lakes, N.J., via e-mail.
Yes, but Spears re-enters a dance floor that's become ever more crowded, thanks to such hitmakers and chart-toppers as Perry, Ke$ha, Gaga and Rihanna. Does Spears still matter?
Sure, says E!'s Baker.
"Britney is not only a contemporary performer, she is a legacy performer. If she wanted to be like Celine Dion and play Caesars every night, she could sell out a show every time. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are contemporary acts. They've only been on the scene a short time. I'm not saying Britney is a more gifted singer or dancer. She's just proved over a long period of time that she can bring it," he says.
Rolling Stone music critic Jody Rosen calls Spears "a pioneer of a lot of the sounds we're hearing. ... American pop radio right now is really dominated by European club sounds, songs that are less hip-hop and more Euro dance music and techno. In that sense she's leading the way. In terms of where she fits in the marketplace, it sort of remains to be seen. ... She's obviously iconic."
"It's just like ice cream," says Gillian Sheldon, vice president of programming at Buzzmedia. "You may have a favorite flavor of ice cream, but you also enjoy chocolate and vanilla. The world is big enough for several different pop divas."
