10:49 p.m.: Nashville’s resident pop star Kelly Clarkson kicks off her set with her recent No. 1 “Stronger.”
She’s wearing a short red dress with a leopard print, leather belt and black boots, and if fans mind that she’s not a fixture on country radio, they’re not showing it.
She gets a pass – she lives here and is friends with Blake Shelton and engaged to Reba McEntire’s stepson, Brandon Blackstock.
In addition, Clarkson has released a song or four to country radio over the years and was nominated in the female vocalist of the year category last November at the CMA Awards.
But she’s still eager to play the CMA Music Festival’s nightly shows at LP Field.
“I’m so pumped because it’s my first official set at a country thing,” she tells fans. “I’ve been so nervous all day because I wanted to do well for you.”
So nervous, in fact, that she admits that she has no idea where she left her enormous yellow diamond engagement ring
“Brandon’s freaking out back there going, ‘What?'"
She plays new song “Tie it Up” and then returns to worrying about where she left her diamond.
“I’m secretly freaking out about where my ring is right now,” she says again. “I know Brandon is probably having a heart attack.”
Clarkson calls the next song “Don’t Rush” a highlight of her career, because she got to sing it with Vince Gill -- however, Gill doesn’t show up to sing it with her.
“There’s nothing cooler than writing a song when you’re 16 and then one day getting to sing it one day with your hero,” she says of next song “Because of You,” her hit duet with Reba McEntire.
She also tells the audience not to get excited -- McEntire isn’t coming out to sing it with her.
Clarkson makes it up to country fans with her next number -- bringing Jason Aldean back out to sing their multi-week No. 1 song “Don’t You Wanna Stay” as fans cheer wildly.
“It’s been a little over a decade for me in the music industry and we wrote this song about the whole ride,” she says before playing “Catch My Breath.”
Following the song, she tells fans she’s had a great time playing for them “except for the whole ring situation.”
Then she says she wants to play a cover for them, but she’s worried because it has a lot of words.
She’s not kidding and doesn’t cut herself any slack.
Clarkson delivers a stellar version of Garth Brooks’ “Ain’t Going Down Til the Sun Comes Up.”
She takes the song to another level welcoming Trisha Yearwood to the stage (Yearwood is married to Brooks).
Just when I thought I couldn't be more in love with Kelly and her voice; she goes and does this.
I mean, her vocals are so beautifully on point. BOY and DR were especially awesome. The CMB was a bit sketchy mostly because of the weird reception from the camera and sometimes it feels like Kelly's voice is being drowned out a bit.
