So its like R&B with a gritty sound.
I mean, I can assume what it is. I just can't say I'd know how to identity it if I heard it.
It doesn't sound like one of those sub-genres you'd be able to pick up by ear, based on instrumentation (bluegrass, baroque pop), or lyrical theme + distinctive sound (gangsta rap, dirty south).

It's not hard to spot "Hip Hop Soul." If you know what a hip hop beat sound like, then you hear a soulful voice or powerful voice on it, that's 'hip hop soul.' A lot of Beyonce's music fall under it.
