You described Cyndi Lauper.
Madonna has sold out a LOT of 100,000+ attendance dates on a wide period. She is a legend

MJ, Elton and Madonna are all 1000x more iconic and relevant right now than Gaga, who will be COMPLETELY (as in, erased from history and never mentioned) forgotten in 5 years max.

And many more! You could argue practically every other single she released in the 80s is a classic, during Born This Way-gate "Express Yourself" was widely referred to as a classic.

I'm 19 years old, born and raised in America, and had never heard of Holiday, Like a Prayer, Papa Don't Preach, La Isla Bonita, or Material Girl before ATRL.
Like a Virgin I knew cause of the Weird Al parody
Vogue I knew cause of Glee
Music I knew cause it was on this random music video channel and i recognize the synths.

OMG Britney used to rule YouTube and now her Sia-written, Joseph Kahn-directed music video for Perfume doesn't even have half the # of views as G.U.Y.
Recurrent airplay: 0.00
Ended up being a vegetable and she has nothing to show off anymore.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Madonna doesn't have a reputation for being "kid friendly" and she's not exactly "cool" to like, so I can see why little kids wouldn't know her.
