The lies when MK8 is one of the most acclaimed games in the series, Smash is still revealing DLC that will drive sales (like Cloud
) and Mario 3D World is loved by critics and fans. Then there's Splatoon, which just won two awards! Plus, XCX is being called "the best RPG in a decade" by critics (i.e. by me). It's not a quality issue here, but a quantity issue; so few games are released that even great ones aren't enough to really drive sales.
