SELENA PERFORMS AT CAL AWARDS
Selena Gomez has called some major buzz as of late with the release of the lead single off her upcoming record. ‘ألماسه (His Diamond)’ was released to favorable reviews from critics who admired Gomez’s growth musically and finally getting involved with her music. Produced by the British rapper and producer, M.I.A. and Danja, the song features Arabian breakdowns and influences throughout the song, even going into a take over of a middle eastern guitar solo. Selena Gomez made her debut performance of the lead single at the Create A Label awards, providing what may be the performance of the night.
The stage set up was very geometrical. Three triangles stood in the center of the stage, the biggest and tallest in the middle, the other two about half the size bigger than the triangle in the middle. The stage had smoke lurking on the sides and in the middle as the host introduced her with enthusiasm. “Performing for the first time her brand new single released today, Selena Gomez!” The stage went from lit to dark as camera’s flashing provided quick glimpses of light of people moving on stage. It went dark for twenty seconds until the sound of thunder cut through the darkness. The thunder continued as the triangles started flashing a bright pink. Over and over it flashed, getting faster and faster, a pink backdrop with faint lines of smoke appearing on the triangles as they flashed. They flashed one more time until they revealed Selena in a hot pink burqa, standing at the front of an army of dancers in black burqas. The audience went wild as the middle eastern thunderous beat that was the intro of His Diamonds started. With black eyeliner, Selena looked fierce as she strutted toward the audience, a Arab dubstep breakdown filling the venue as she reached the end of the catwalk. The lights flashed black for a three seconds a quick operatic crescendo interrupting the breakdown as the lights flashed and the fabric of Selena’s Burqa was snatched, revealing Selena in a sexy pink, rose patterned, almost transparent, piece of lingerie with a veil over her face. The veil was the same color as her burqa, and you could see her face well. She had a head microphone as she started to sing the first verse of the song completely live. The dancers removed the burqas shortly after Selena did hers and they did poses on sync with the beat of the song with Selena as she continued singing the first verse. The triangles behind them contrasted between a haunting and smoky pink, black smoke filling the stage as she hit the pre-chorus of the song. Smoke shot up in the air on either side of Selena and her dancers as they started doing some hip movements to the middle eastern guitar that Selena sang over a backing track too. The chorus hit and the girls broke out in to a epic dance routine after Selena sang the part leading up to the chorus breakdown of the song. They moved fluidly on stage, the lights above them flashing as the triangles flashed secretive messages in the Arabic language. The second verse hit and smoke filled the stage as handsome men descended from the ceiling wearing thawbs. Their feet hit the ground at the perfect moment during the second verse that featured a short breakdown with the signature arabic guitar as the male dancers in their thawbs joined Selena and the female dancers for an middle eastern choreographed-like routine. The second chorus took the performance to a different theme as Selena’s dancers (guys and girls) continued dancing but Selena walked back out to the catwalk. The bridge had hit by the she was there and two men in thawbs came from either side of the catwalk where Selena was as the lights flashed. When the lights stayed on, the entire stage in front of Selena was full of king cobras who were up as a flute and arabic like beat was the bridge. The original bridge of the song with lyrics were cut as Selena danced with the king cobras until the two men came to retrieve them as the whole stage went dark. A pink spotlight shined on from Selena above as she sang the bridge acapella before another breakdown hit and Selena’s female dancers had a large pink fabric and ran in circles with around Selena, a spotlight showing Selena’s figure behind the sheet. Selena did exotic dancing to the break down. The crowd cheered as Selena continued with her exotic dancing until the dancers snatched the sheet from in front of her and it flew up to the ceiling. The men were stripped from their thawbs to being shirtless besides a headpiece. They male dancers all touched over Selena until the final chorus came in and all the dancers and Selena did one last dance as the retreated back to the main stage. The triangles lit up pink until the middle one turned black, and the other two pink, to reveal the contrast between Selena’s pink stage outfit, and her dancers black ones to the pink triangles. The crowd went wild as Selena and her dancers exited on either side of the stage.
