4 is a major departure from this formula. While her first three albums often sounded like they were meant to please others, 4, is clearly made to satisfy Beyoncé, first and foremost. The result is her most personal album to date; an album that revels in its relaxed grooves but is totally unafraid to push musical boundaries that a pop-star of a lesser status could not even attempt.

TIME magazine trashed it, but it doesn't count towards the metascore.

I actually find it to be a little harsh

But that's all the album offers: well-executed songs performed by a talented woman who refuses to scratch anything more than the surface.

Beyoncé is good at four things: singing, dancing in high heels, avoiding questions about Jay-Z and crafting superb pop songs with either hypocritical or meaningless messages.

Yeah, the first quote is pretty harsh, but I actually didn't find the second one to be that big of a deal.

It's either "the ballads are boring" "oh, we don't FEEL her" or the stereotyping "this is NOT Beyonce- RTW is classic B!"
Like, can you sound anymore stupid?
That Washington Post review solidified it when he said something to the effect that Beyonce's dance songs were her thing on DIL when DIL only has 3 uptempos- the same amount as 4.
I wish I could meet with these negative reviewers face to face and embarrass their ass with their lack of research and horrid argumentative points.

|
!!!!!!
They don't sound like they're familiar with her work at all. Always talking about how the "real" Beyonce should be giving us a B'Day part 2. Hell..B'Day had uncharacteristically MORE up-tempos than what someone who has actually listened to her albums would expect. Destiny's Child, TWOTW, DIL, Destiny Fulfilled. Those aren't exactly uptempo galore.
What's more baffling is the reviews that talk about Bey like she makes the usual uninteresting pop stuff, yet maintain that she should stick to singing what people expect from her. Makes no damn sense.

I can't help but to be a little underwhelmed by that score knowing that without the Uk reviews, the score will be closer to 80. But well the album is a classic and most people agree on that.

4 flows like magic... A magic only King B can create!
Beyoncé was on top of the world after releasing her third solo album "I Am... Sasha Fierce" in 2008. How she intended to follow that success was unknown, but she managed to do so with her most mature, emotionally deep, and sonically cohesive album to date! While it's true the track's on "4" might not be what we've come to expect from Beyoncé in the past, with this album she's sending us a clear message: Beyoncé cannot be defined!
As much as people will attempt to box her in and claim that "4" is going to flop commercially, its position on iTunes charts all around the world right now proves otherwise. While Run The World (Girls) was seen as a non-orthodox choice for a lead single, it was Beyoncé's message to the world that she's here to stay. On this album, as well, that message rings true! The way this album flows is truly magical. I will give each track a rating (out of 5) below, and I'll compile the scores to give an average (though overall I give the album a solid 5/5!)
1. 1+1 - [5/5]
2. I Care [4.9/5]
3. I Miss You [4.5/5]
4. Best Thing I Never Had [4.9/5]
5. Party (feat. André 3000) [3.8/5]
6. Rather Die Young [3.5/5]
7. Start Over [4.5/5]
8. Love On Top [4/5]
9. Countdown [5/5]
10. End of Time [4.7/5]
11. I Was Here [5/5]
12. Run The World (Girls) [4.7/5]
Overall: [4.5/5] - In other words, I definitely recommend purchasing this album! It's not in line with what's popular on the radio right now, but that's all the more reason to love it. As big a star as Beyoncé is, she took a risk releasing such a, for lack of a better phrase, "non-commercial" album, but if you give it a chance to grow on you, most of you will be enjoying it for years to come!

Yes, as Linnen said, it's mine. Lol. Also, the original post doesn't say this thread is ONLY for "professional" reviews. :] Besides, where else would I put it? Other than perhaps a blog...? If BestBuy.com, Target.com, Amazon.com, and iTunes allowed me to put that review up, therefore helping reaffirm the brilliance of the album to potential buyers on those sites, I think I've earned the right to post it here. Lol.

The important thing is that the critics who matter (...more) graded her highly. the actual average is 69 but the most reputable critics weigh in more to the score .
