In Germany and probably other European countries, no one even knew that the song is out besides the hardcore fans that check everything online 24/7.
Lets say there was no hype. It is sitting in the Top 10 getting exposure and those people buying Katy's new song or BL can easily see it. I can't speak for everyone but I know when I go on iTunes I look at the Top 10 and listen to a song I don't know out of curiosity. Obviously those people are not buying it either.
