With just a few days to go until Hunger Games fever hits cinemas, the blockbuster’s director and co-writer Gary Ross has revealed some of the changes he made to the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ first book in the teen novel trilogy.

Ross told MTV News it was difficult to choose which scenes to cut while staying faithful to Collins’ book. The most significant cut (spoiler alert!) is the moment when Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) meets an Avox, a tongueless servant in the Capitol.

“There’s a subplot that Suzanne goes into, which I love, which is about this girl, almost a precursor to Katniss, who was engaged in a flight toward freedom, apprehended by the Capitol, turned into an Avox,” Ross said.

“It was just that there was no room for that in the storytelling, unfortunately. The William Faulkner line is, ‘You have to kill your darlings.’ That was one that unfortunately fell by the wayside. I was sorry about it.”

Having said that, Ross has added certain scenes that don’t appear in the first book, including a riot after Rue’s death.

“I thought it was important that you begin to start to make the turn into Catching Fire [the second book and film] that you see the seeds of the rebellion, you see what Katniss has caused,” he said.

“It’s a change Suzanne loves. It’s something that she’s fully embraced as well, that you begin to see the incipient beginnings of this rebellion.”

Fun fact; Ross’ friend and regular collaborator Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Contagion) helped film the riot scene.

Early buzz from this week’s premiere screenings have been hugely positive, with film bloggers labelling it “exceptional” (Slashfilm), “a new sci-fi classic” (Coming Soon) and “as good as the book … [it] had a Lord of the Rings-epic feeling by the end” (First Showing).

I personally looked forward to see the Avox but I don't care that much about that change.

The biggest change im mad about so far is Peetas leg doesn't have to be amputated in the movie and as a result there is no 'banging' on the glass scene and there is no reunion between the two on the stage at the final interview. I was really looking forward to the visual version of that when I was reading the book.

I cannot explain how excited I am for this. I really hope they haven't screwed things up, and taken away major parts of the violence just so the younger audience can watch it.

That really sucks, to be honest.
What I'm most mad about though is the visuals of the people from the Capitol - especially Snow. They seem to be so much more weird in the books.

As far as I know, they did those scenes with handhelds. The violence is why it's PG-13.

I watched it earlier today and i can say it's awesome. Yes, they made some changes to the story but they're not bad at all. The scenes with Rue are touching and beautiful. I know the fans won't be disappointed.

That was kind of important though. Well, not important...but reinforcing. It symbolizes the permanent damage left from the arena.
