A front loaded flop, perhaps, but Wii definitely had more impact than anything Sony or Microsoft created.

Lies.
The PS2 had enough impact for Nintendo to drop a console before Sony using outdated hardware (twice) in-fear of being overshadowed, and to redesign the "classic" controller to match the PS2 layout just "incase" people didn't like the new remote. Even though the "classic" layout was nothing like the Gamecube's layout.
And the 360 was known to be rush-released to be out before Sony and they hadn't finished the fine-tuning which is why the early editions broke so easily and it ruined Xbox's longterm fanbase. The basic version came with Memory Cards (like WTF not even flash storage like the Wii) and DVD's which meant disc swapping. Had they waited and fine tuned it, they could have made it a better experience. Sony waited for BluRay before launching the console and it worked in their favour longterm.

Now, while Nintendo and MS benefited from coming out earlier (if people had to choose one console, they chose from what was available) and the PS3's launch price was insane, Sony did end up catching up for the most part. Nintendo and MS got too comfortable and Sony's simple vision got the best of them again.
The Wii and 360 were both products of "get in before Sony" and lacked the thoughtout process the PS3 had. Which is why people are flocking to the PS4 without Sony lifting a finger, because people acknowledged that during the last era.
