I went through a huge break up in the summer of 2011 so Start Over and BTINH have a special place in my heart. They're not a bop like Couhndown or End of Time which are easygoing fun.
Start Over is such a passionate and complex song, just hear those intense yet vulnerable vocals ... there was something there that was amazing at one time, you can't dismiss that so easily.... why throw all the hard work away when it all meant everything at some point. Lets settle it and make peace. it's being an optimist at such a fragile state in a relationship, it's not clearly black and white.
I love it when Bey releases complex songs like that, just look at Resentment, If I Were A Boy, Broken Hearted Girl, Start Over, Mine and Jealous.
When it doesn't work out, BTINH is such a relateable song, that song is my most played Beyonce song on my Last.fm. It got me through so much. You gave your all and displayed it, now you can't keep on being miserable.
It's a big "**** you" to someone who didn't give it their all even though you did. You can clearly tell she did by hearing "Start Over" and "I Care". You want to give someone the benefit of the doubt with those two previous songs but now.... it reaches a point where you can't keep on crying about it, you have to move on, on your end you gave it your all, you did your best, you loved someone and even though it hurt, for personal growth, yeah they were the best thing one never had.
Then it moves on to "I Was Here", this song made me cry the first time I herd it. You went through all this **** and all these amazing moments but at the end of the day this is your life. You were here, you had and impact on many people's life, be it partners, family and what not. Every single choice you made resulted in an impact on somebody else's life. You live and learn, brought someone some happiness for some time or for a lifetime, you can't regret things, at least you did something, you weren't a do nothing bitch...
Personally 4 is a great album regarding relationships. It just depends on the order of the songs.
