Same. it makes no sense.
I remember when Aaliyah died, it was horrible (not for the reason you'll think). My gran died the same year and I was crushed. Of course not the same connection, but I loved Aaliyah, we didn't see many black people on tv in the UK at the time and she was really loved, cause r&b did well at the time. I used to kind of look up to those black folk and see myself in them, that's part of the reason I love Janet, Bey, but especially the black British stars like Alexandra (like her music or not, she did damn well for a time for a not light skin girl - coming through a national tv comp in white england lmao), Beverley Knight and Jamelia - not many make it at all, and especially having dark skin here is HARD.
Mum got me More Than A Woman on cd, it went to No.1 too. I remember the video and nearly crying because of how perfect she was

Such a queen. And the RIP message at the end got me every time.
And @Willy...I get you. That's the reason my family don't know. I haven't come out to them, they're loving and I don't think they'd be bothered, but some West Indians can be beyond a mess. I only see my aunty (the ultra religious one) having an issue with it. I just don't want the drama tbh. That's part of why I want to live in London. Small town mentality is awful.
