Speak Now set really high lyrical benchmark for taylor!! it is really hard to top/match that again!
like, right now, when evryone was going AT SOG for having 2 lines in 30 seconds and stuff, i was searching for SN songs whose 30 seconds would be like that(lyrically/sonically disappointing).. and i honeslty couldnt find one! i really couldnt find a bad 30 second of any song!
To be honest, I do not think her new album will live up to the hype lyrically
Based on what we've heard so far, I can tell you Red's gonna be a comercially successful record with mixed to positive reviews from music critics (probably 3.5/5 from RS and 63-67 on Metacritic).
I hope there are still masterpiece left on the album aside from the promo singles. I want to be caught off-guard slayed like how I felt with Enchanted and Haunted.

I think those are the ones I liked initially but looking over the song as a whole it use seems childish. IDK I've had a bad relationship with that song from day 1. I was in Nashville when it was released with a bunch of fans and we were all like "what is this....?" For the whole week. Like I was afraid that when I saw taylor I'd just be like I CAN'T EVEN and say nothing more.

I don't necessarily think the quality of her lyrics is falling on Red. If you read her interview with Rolling Stone, she said she sought out other songwriters and producers (specifically Max Martin and Dan Wilson) to teach her more about writing lyrics with a deeper understanding of melody. Simplicity isn't always a bad thing, and these collaborations certainly paid off so far with her pop songs: We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble. are much more polished and melodically pleasing than the likes of The Story Of Us and Better Than Revenge, in my opinion.
Speak Now was dense and powerful lyrically, but it struggled both under its own weight and from the pop that she brought into it without proper guidance. I feel like this album is experimenting with some of those sounds that she really wants to and doing it under the proper mentors.
I think "Red" is the weakest song I've heard so far, and it's not even because of the lyrics. It's because it sounds washed out. It doesn't have the heart or fearlessness of WANEGBT or IKYWT. It's cute, though.
Another reason why Tay may have put BA as the closing track is to stress that no matter how much she may experiment with her sound she will always be coming back to her country roots.
